Oregon toddler fatally struck by lawn mower

VENETA, Ore. (AP) — A 2-year-old boy died after his father accidentally backed over him with a riding mower, authorities said.

Tanner Ewert was playing in the front yard Sunday night when he moved behind the mower just as his father, Travis Ewert, shifted into reverse, said Sgt. Clint Riley, spokesman for the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.

The Lane County District Attorney’s office reviewed the sheriff’s report on Monday and determined the death was an accident.

“Let this serve as a lesson to us all ... how dangerous these situations are,’’ Riley said.

The accident was the second this year involving a riding mower and a child in Lane County. On May 10, Kirk Norton was using his riding lawn mower at his home in Springfield when he accidentally backed over his daughter, 2-year-old Isabelle Norton. Her left leg was amputated.
