In brief: Time Warner CEO speaks at OSU

CORVALLIS — Richard Parsons, the chairman and chief executive officer of Time Warner, will give a free public lecture at Oregon State University at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8.

The lecture, “The Future of Media,” is sponsored by OSU’s College of Business as part of the Dean’s Distinguished Lecture Series. It will be in the Austin Auditorium at LaSells Stewart Center, Southwest 26th Street and Western Boulevard.

Parsons became CEO in May 2002 and chairman in May 2003. He was named the “Top CEO in the Entertainment Industry” by Institutional Investor magazine in 2005.

Prior to his tenure at Time Warner, he served as chairman and CEO at Dime Bancorp Inc.; was managing partner of the New York law firm Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler; and held various positions in state and federal government.

Teen Summit set for Wednesday

CORVALLIS — The Benton County Commission on Children and Families Youth Commission will hold Teen Summit 2007 “Live Out Loud” from 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at OSU.

Benton County teens are invited to join their peers and learn more about issues that impact their lives such as alcohol and drug abuse.

The event, in the La Sells Stewart Center and the CH2M Hill Alumni Center, also will feature workshops on healthy relationships, college planning, sports careers, self defense, yoga and more.

JeVon Thompson, a motivational speaker, will give the keynote address. Thompson has been featured on the “Oprah Winfrey Show,” “ABC World News” and CNN.

Teen Summit 2007 is open to all Benton County high school-age students. Registration forms are available at all Benton County high schools.

Lecture focuses on Taiwan, China

CORVALLIS — OSU’s history department is launching a new lecture series that will focus on Taiwan, greater China and Asia. The Chun Chiu Lecture Series begins Thursday, Feb. 8.

Douglas Fix, a professor of East Asian history and Chinese humanities at Reed College in Portland, will give a talk titled “The Issue of the ‘Colonial’ in Taiwan’s History.” The speech begins at 4 p.m. in Memorial Union room 208. Admission is free.

Fix will examine Qing and Japanese colonialism as they apply to Taiwan. He has been a student of Taiwan’s history since his undergraduate days at Taiwan University in the mid-1970s.

The Chun Chiu lecture series is made possible by a gift from OSU alumnus Chun Chiu.

LBCC hosts annual Family Fun Raiser

ALBANY — The 30th annual Family Fun Raiser at LBCC will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, in the Activities Center gym on the main campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd. S.W.

Children ages 1-6 can enjoy activities provided by LBCC parenting classes, such as play dough, an obstacle course, seed planting, basketball, face painting and clean mud. Activities for parents include the used toy and book sale and silent auction.

Activity tickets are 25 cents each. All proceeds from this event support parenting programs and provide tuition grants for some of the nearly 2,000 parents in Linn and Benton counties who are involved in LBCC Parenting Education each year.
