Band to give Christmas concert

The Willamette Valley Concert band will present Christmas music for the entire family at 2 p.m. Dec. 15 at the United Presbyterian Church, 350 Fifth Ave., in Albany.

The church’s pastors, Glenn and Sharon Edwards, will sing a variety of Christmas songs with the band, including “I Saw Three Ships,” “Ding Dong Merrily on High,” “Deck the Halls” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” They also will narrate “The Bells of Christmas,” which explains how Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was inspired to write the poem “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,” during the height of the American Civil War.

The concert will also feature an audience sing-along of “O Come All Ye Faithful;” two band arrangements of Mannheim Steamroller favorites, “Fanfare and Hark The Herald Angels Sing” and “Fum Fum Fum.”

“A Fireside Christmas” by famous big-band composer-arranger Sammy Nestico will include “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “I’ll be Home for Christmas,” “Frosty The Snowman,” “Winter Wonderland” and “The Christmas Song.“

The band will close the one-hour concert with Leroy Anderson’s popular “Sleigh Ride” and several other traditional Christmas carols.

The band directors are Dr. Richard Sorenson, emeritus director of bands at Western Oregon University, and Christine Barreto, a retired Lebanon music teacher.

The concert is free; donations will be accepted.

For more information, go to www.willamettevalleyconcertband.org or contact Sorenson at (503) 838-3474.
