No Pearl Harbor remembrance this year

There was not a Pearl Harbor Day remembrance this morning on the steps of the Linn County Courthouse.

The annual event held at the hour Pearl Harbor was attacked was cancelled primarily for two reasons, said Garner Pool, a World War II Navy veteran: The number of people attending the day of reflection got to be fewer than the participants, and the number of Pearl Harbor survivors is dwindling.

Instead there was a breakfast for veterans at the American Legion Post 10 building in Albany.

Auction will benefit West’s senior grad party

West Albany High School senior class parents will host a holiday auction starting at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the high school cafeteria. Proceeds will benefit the drug- and alcohol-free all-night senior party.

Auction items include holiday centerpieces, tailgate parties, water skis, Beaver and Duck mailboxes, tuition to the MusiCafe Rock School in Corvallis, holiday cookies and candies, a West Albany athletic pass and Bulldog sports gear. There is a $5 fee for a bid number.

The evening will include free food and entertainment.

Former resident’s artwork on display this month

Watercolor paintings by Helen Kropp will be on display this month at Shawn’s on First, 119 First Ave. N.E., which is open nightly for dinner.

Kropp, originally from Albany, resides in Newport. She began painting in Albany, in 1967, taking art classes at Linn-Benton Community College. She has also studied at Clackamas Community College, Western Oregon University, Oregon State University and the Scottsdale Art School in Arizona. She has participated in workshops and art classes on the West Coast and in New Mexico.

Her paintings, cards and prints often feature St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Whitespires church and other historic Albany buildings.

Recent paintings include seascapes, boats, lighthouses and scenes of Newport’s historic Nye Beach area and bayfront.

LBCC winter registration is open

Registration is open for winter term classes at Linn-Benton Community College. Registration office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Continuing LBCC students can register online 24 hours a day at sis.linnbenton.edu (not available 9 p.m. Fridays through 9 a.m. Saturdays). Classes begin Jan. 7.

New students must apply through LBCC Admissions and take a placement test before registering. Admissions office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, visit linnbenton.edu or call the admissions office at 917-4811.

LBCC and all its centers will be closed Dec. 24-28 for winter break, and Dec. 31-Jan. 1 for New Year’s Day. Normal operations will resume Jan. 2.

LGBT chorus to give holiday concerts

Confluence: Willamette Valley LGBT Chorus will perform its holiday concert, “Behold the Star!,” in Salem and Corvallis.

The chorus will sing a variety of festive songs such as “Gloria Deo!,” “Scarlet Ribbons” and “Calypso Noel.” There will also be an audience sing-along of familiar Christmas carols.

The Salem concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church, 700 Marion St. N.E. The Corvallis concert will be at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 2940 N.W. Circle Blvd.

Tickets are available at the door or from chorus members for $15, or $12 for seniors and students.
