Community Applause Award: The Corvallis Clinic has received the 2007 Community Applause Award, a recognition co-sponsored by the Oregon Bankers Association and Oregon Business Magazine. The award was presented at the association’s annual Directors & Officers Winter Conference in Portland.

Andrew Perry, CEO of The Corvallis Clinic, and Doug Bourdo, CFO/Controller of The Corvallis Clinic, accepted the award on behalf of the Clinic.

The award is given in recognition of an organization’s outstanding service and community investment. Citizens Bank of Corvallis nominated The Corvallis Clinic in the 50-or-more employees category. A second category is 50-or-fewer employees. One winner is selected statewide in each category to receive a commemorative plaque and a $1,000 donation to a non-profit community organization of their choice. The businesses are also featured in Oregon Business Magazine.

The Corvallis Clinic currently employs 80 physicians & surgeons and 600 employees.

Grass seed honors: Two Linn County farmers were recently recognized at the Oregon Seed Growers League Conference.

Don Wirth of Cala Farms received the “Voice of the Grass Seed Industry” award for his many years in grass seed research and market develop projects.

The “Seedman of the Year” award was present to Dave Malpass of Harrisburg.

Both men were praised for decades of commitment to numerous OSU research and Extension projects.

Chamber speaker: State Climatologist George Taylor will be the guest speaker at the Jan. 30 Albany Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center. Serving starts at 11:30 a.m. with the program at noon.

Taylor is a member of the Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences faculty at Oregon State University. He has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the U.C. Santa Barbara and a master’s degree in meteorology from the University of Utah.

He and his wife Cindy live in Corvallis. They have two children, Annie, 25, and Tim, 20. He enjoys playing guitar, running, surfing and bicycle riding.

Eggs and Issues: Humorist and outdoor writer Pat Wray will be the guest speaker at the seventh annual Eggs and Issues breakfast Feb. 12 at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center.

The 7 a.m. breakfast is sponsored by the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce.

Wray is a freelance writer and author who lives in Corvallis. He is a former Marine helicopter pilot and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife information officer. He has written a book, A Chukar Hunter’s Companion, and writes for several magazines. He is a general interest and outdoor column writer for the Albany Democrat-Herald and Corvallis Gazette-Times.

Continuing Education: A free introductory workshop for low-to-moderate income individuals interested in starting or expanding a small business will be held today from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the community room of Ray’s Food Place, 621 Hickory Ave. N.W.
