SCHOLARSHIPS
Music scholarships — Student musicians who are high school seniors and live in Linn, Benton, or Lincoln counties, or music students from those counties who are already in college, may now apply for the Loene P. Guthrie Scholarship or the Dorothy May Jenks Scholarship. The deadline for applying is March 21. Auditions will be on Sunday, April 6, in Corvallis. Judges will grant from one to four awards, ranging from $1,000 to $500 each, depending on the qualifications and numbers of applicants.
The Guthrie Scholarship is awarded to encourage music teaching. The Jenks Scholarship is aimed at all music students, not just those who plan to teach. Loene P. Guthrie taught piano in Corvallis for more than 40 years. She established an endowment to begin after her death. Doris Scharpf of Albany established an endowment to create the Dorothy May Jenks Scholarship, to honor her dear friend who was a musician and active supporter of musical organizations in Albany. These endowments are managed by the Benton County Foundation, and the scholarship competition is administered by Oregon Music Teachers Association, Linn-Benton Chapter. Applications are available from Shirley Byrne. Call 757-8695 or e-mail sandjbyrne@comcast.net.
