Flo Chamberlain, 91, is averaging 135 for her AMF Albany Lanes Senior League team this season.
Still rolling along

Although she admits her game isn’t what it used to be, Flo Chamberlain can still be counted on to mark in her share of frames.

At nearly 92, that’s pretty impressive.

“I won’t be 92 until May,” she says firmly.

That means for more than 60 years, Chamberlain has bowled lanes throughout the Northwest. Now halfway through her third season in the AMF Albany Lanes Senior League, she brings an average of 135 to her team.

“I’ve played for teams that have won a few tournaments but it’s just a lot of fun,” she emphasizes.

Most of her experience came in Caldwell, Idaho, where she took up the sport in 1937 following a vacation where she and a friend happened on a bowling ally.

“We went in and didn’t know what it was all about. We bowled our first games in high heels,” she laughs.

The right shoes made a difference and she has kept up her game for all these years. She cut back her bowling after getting married but eventually returned to the lanes on a reasonably regular basis.

When her family moved to Albany in 2005, she came along and at the urging of fellow bowler Mary Warner, she joined her current team — Razzle Dazzle — and twice a week joins her team for the competition.

“It’s a little more difficult than it used to be,” she admits. “but I enjoy it just as much.”

She no longer wields the 16-pound ball she rolled for many years but she tends to get the job done quite well with her 12-pounder.

“She’s very good and a lot of fun to bowl with,” says teammate Frank Donckers. “She’s better than I am.”

Her scores show her talent. Included in her totals over the last year are a 209 scratch game as part of her 506 high series. She was only 90 then.

Chamberlain who is retired from Mountain Bell Telephone Company, figures she would probably be getting higher scores if her back were better, but she shakes it off.

“I’ve always enjoyed it and I don’t see any reason to stop,” she said. “I plan to go as far as I can with it.”

Warner makes sure she gets to the games, stopping by to pick her up every Tuesday and Thursday.

Chamberlain enjoys the friendships that include teammates Donckers and 80-year-old Maxine Brown, who is also a strong bowler.

“We all have a good time. I really enjoy the friendly crowds,” says Chamberlain.

They seem to enjoy her as well. As Cecil Estep, who plays on an opposing team says simply enough, “she’s fun and she’s good.”
