Santiam Christian is continuing its stretch as one of the state’s top academic and athletic high schools.
The Eagles are leading the The Oregonian Cup for 3A schools through the winter sports season.
Santiam Christian has won the Cup each school year but one since it was created in 1999. Burns won the Cup in 2006-07.
The Oregonian Cup began as a way to recognize overall excellence by schools in academics, activities and athletics.
Schools earn points based on their participation and finish in OSAA state championships and for top-10 finishes in the OSAA Academic All-State Program, sponsored by the Dairy Farmers of Oregon.
A sportsmanship component, whereby schools are awarded points each season for having no ejections, is included as well.
The points are updated and released at the end of fall and winter seasons and totaled at the end of the year. The school earning the highest points in each classification receives a commemorative trophy from The Oregonian and the OSAA.
Through the winter sports season, Santiam Christian has 2,285 points to lead the 3A standings. Burns is second with 2,080. Harrisburg is 25th with 710 and Jefferson is 33rd at 505.
In the 5A standings, West Albany is 11th (1,523), South Albany 28th (916) and Lebanon 36th (555). Hermiston is first at 2,651.
