ALBANY

Birds of prey program set at library


School-age kids and adults are invited to a presentation by Chintimini Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the basement of the Albany downtown Carnegie library, 302 Ferry St. S.W.

Participants will see live birds of prey from the center, which rehabilitates injured wildlife. To ensure the safety of the birds, participants are asked to enter the room quietly and slowly and sit still during the program.

JEFFERSON

Memorial set for firefighter


A special memorial service for Albert D. Nollen, a volunteer firefighter with the Jefferson Rural Fire Protection District for 30 years, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jefferson High School, 2220 Talbot Road.

Members of the fire service are encouraged to attend the memorial and a reception following. Class “A” uniforms are appropriate.

Nollen, 67, died April 20. He joined the fire district in 1968 and was firefighter of the year twice.

MID-VALLEY

Spelling contest winners announced


Winners have been announced in the annual Linn and Benton Regional Spelling Contest, held Tuesday at Calapooia Middle School in Albany.

Students from Sweet Home, Lebanon, Corvallis and Albany participated in three divisions. Division I is grades 1-5; Division II is grades 6-8; and Division III is grades 9-12.

Each first-place winner at the regional level receives a certificate and is invited to participate in the annual statewide spelling contest, to be held Aug. 30 at the Oregon State Fairgrounds during the Oregon State Fair.

The winners:

Elementary, Division I

1st: Sarah Weishaupt, Sand Ridge Charter School, Lebanon.

2nd: Mitch Butzner, Periwinkle Elementary School, Albany.

3rd: Gil Parnon, Hoover Elementary School, Corvallis.

Middle School, Division II

1st: Rachel LaChapelle, North Albany Middle School.

2nd: Alex LaChapelle, North Albany Middle School.

3rd: Morgan Peterson, Hamilton Creek School, Lebanon.

High School, Division III

1st: Kevin Rackham, South Albany High School.

2nd: Alex Bengel, South Albany High School.

3rd: Tyler Kelly, Lebanon High School.

SWEET HOME

Kids invited to fish at Sunnyside


A fishing event for kids will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Sunnyside Park, on Quartsville Road at the north end of Foster Lake, just east of Sweet Home.

There will be about 1,600 trout planted, including 500 fish at 2 pounds each. Rods, tackle and bait will be provided for those needing them. Volunteers will provide assistance with casting, rigging and fish cleaning.
