MONMOUTH - Dani Kastrava quickly turned disappointment into redemption Tuesday afternoon.
The West Albany freshman false-started and was disqualified in her 100-meter preliminary heat of the Mid-Willamette Conference track and field district meet at Western Oregon University.
But a few minutes later she was standing on the long jump runway with a chance to make up for being a little too quick out of the starting blocks.
Kastrava did just that, going from third to first on her final jump with a personal-best of 17 feet, 11/2 inches to qualify for next week’s 5A state meet at Hayward Field in Eugene.
She entered the district meet with the Mid-Willamette’s third-best 100 time.
“I was really mad, so I was trying to motivate myself more by doing better and not just getting down on myself,” Kastrava said.
But she almost didn’t get the state berth, needing second place to qualify.
She was two and a half inches behind second after her second of three jumps in the finals.
The last one I was like ‘I have to do this or I won’t go to state,’” Kastrava said.
One of the two competitors Kastrava jumped past was freshman teammate Sara Carrasco, who was third at 16-2, eight inches off the automatic qualifying mark.
West coach Craig Swanson credited Kastrava with bouncing back so quickly.
“She really had to compose herself,” he said. “You go from that to popping her best jump of the season. It was a beautiful jump, too.”
Kastrava will have a chance to qualify in two more events — the 200 and 400 relay — today, when the meet concludes.
All remaining field events begin at 5 p.m and the first running event — the girls 400 relay — starts at 5:30.
Justin Boies continued his strong season in the high jump with a win after clearing 6 feet, 4 inches.
The South Albany senior didn’t set a personal best but did improve on his 6-1 clearance in the 2007 meet.
“I did a lot better than last year, thankfully,” he said.
Crescent Valley’s Jeff Borgerson was second at 6-2.
Boies was shooting for the school record of
6-7 — one inch better than his own PR set last week — but he’s OK with the victory.
“But that’s going to be another day,” Boies said of the record. “It was all good, I just didn’t use my arms like I was supposed to.”
Joining Boies at state will be teammate Antony Earley, who won the 3,000 with a time of 9 minutes, 10.57 seconds, a personal best by almost eight seconds. Brad Nelson of Corvallis was close behind in 9:11.66.
West Albany senior David Frome admits he was aiming for second place in Tuesday’s pole vault final.
But a four-inch personal best gave Frome the win at 12-9.
He had just the fifth-best conference mark for the season coming in. But Crescent Valley’s Doug Pentland and Silverton’s Calvin Grant couldn’t clear 12-6 in three attempts while Frome made it on his first. Frome went on to clear 12-9 but missed on three chances at
13-0.
Frome had a PR of 11-6 last week before a clearance of 12-5 in a dual against Woodburn.
He says the improvement is just from hard work.
“I’ve really been pushing myself to get it,” Frome said. “I’ve been working on getting consistent.“
West Albany’s Anthony LaCoste continued his long jump dual with Silverton’s Derek Newsom.
Newsom came away with the victory, jumping 23-43/4 to LaCoste’s 22-61/2. They had the two best 5A marks entering the meet and each set a personal best Tuesday, Newsom by one-quarter inch and LaCoste by one inch.
They’ll continue the rivalry next week at Hayward.
“It was just going back and forth. We were definitely pushing each other,” LaCoste said. “It just makes me want to focus more and go out and beat him.”
Lebanon’s Marcus Greenly was third at 21-1, falling short of the qualifying mark by six inches.
South Albany’s Michael VanDoren finished third in the discus at 149-3, narrowly missing the qualifying mark of 151-0.
