Dems pick valley trio to attend convention

Three delegates from the mid-valley will help represent Oregon at the Democratic National Convention this August.

They are Benton County Commissioner Annabelle Jaramillo of Philomath, North Albany resident Harry “Sam” Sappington, and state Rep. Sara Gelser of Corvallis.

Sappington is chairman of the Benton County Democratic Party.

Members of the Oregon party met for their state convention at Western Oregon University in Monmouth Saturday and elected delegates to complete the state’s delegation to the national meeting, which will be held Aug. 25-28 in Denver.

Jaramillo and Gelser are supporters of Hillary Clinton for president. Sappington backs Barack Obama.

Oregon will send a total of 65 delegates and nine alternates to Denver.

Fifty two are determined by the results of the May 20 primary. Of those 52, 34 are apportioned at the congressional district level and 18 at the state level.Twelve more are automatic or “super” delegates.

One more, former Gov. Barbara Roberts, is an unpledged add-on delegate elected at the state convention.
