BROWNSVILLE — “I don’t shut up, I grow up, and when I look at you, I throw up!”

The movie is set in 1959, but the premise of “Stand by Me” is timeless: four foul-mouthed youngsters palling around, talking about “chicks” and generally bonding.

Oh yes, and they also find a dead body.

“Stand by Me” was shot mostly in Brownsville in 1985, and the city is celebrating the movie filming as it did last year, with special activities planned for Saturday, Aug. 16.

The “Stand by Me Cruise In and Sock Hop” is sponsored by the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce.

This year’s event will feature a vintage car cruise-in, a sock hop in the Brownsville gymnasium, and locations set up around town with a viewing stand to show exact scene angles from the film, said event chairwoman Linda McCormick.

There will also be Hot Wheels races for kids and 1950s-era activities, including hula hoops, jacks and marbles. Commemorative yo-yo’s will be for sale.

A group from Shedd, Teen Challenge, will hold the blueberry pie eating contest. In a change from last year, this competition is geared toward “amateur” eaters, not professionals from the Federation of Competitive Eating.

The Brownsville Saloon, which was used as Irby’s Billiards in the movie, will feature karaoke and prizes for customers dressed in 1950s costumes.

“Stand by Me” featured many famous names, including Wil Wheaton, Corey Feldman, Jerry O’Connell, Kiefer Sutherland and River Phoenix. Rob Reiner directed the film.

Brownsville served as the fictional town of Castle Rock, where Stephen King set the novella the movie is based upon.
