‘It was a healing time’

SCIO — About 40 people gathered to remember a friend, classmate and fellow 4-H and FFA member Sunday as they helped weed the Gourley family corn field.

Nathan Gourley, 16, of Scio died July 24 when a log truck collided with the farm vehicle he was driving. He had just finished his sophomore year at Scio High School in June.

Nathan’s mother, Arlene, said many of his friends, along with others who didn’t know him personally but had heard of the accident volunteered to help weed tall corn by hand. They also shared a meal and prayed together Sunday afternoon.

“It was beautiful,” she said. “It was a healing time for a lot of people. It was great, and it was a huge help to have them go through the tall corn.”
