Cross country

HILLSBORO — The West Albany boys placed eighth while the Bulldog girls finished in ninth among 18 total 6A and 5A cross country teams competing at the Bill Chapman Invitational.

Jesuit’s Christian Burger set the pace for the boys at Rood Bridge Park with a time of 16:07 over the 5k race while Jordan Monroe was West’s best finisher, placing 16th out of 119 runners with a time of 17:10 to help West place third amongst all 5A teams.

Nicole Hoby led the way for the West girls at 22:17 while Erin Jamison came in 14 seconds behind her teammate to give the Bulldogs two top-30 finishers.

“They battled really well and ran hard as far as a first meet goes,” said Bulldogs coach Brad Creager.

West Albany will race at South Salem on Saturday.

Boys soccer

Lebanon 3, Blanchet 0

Two freshmen scored their first varsity goals as the Warriors rolled to an easy victory over 2A Blanchet.

Alex Albion got the scoring started with a goal in the 30th minute on a penalty kick. Yovani Alvarez finished out the scoring deep in the second half.

Junior Jeff Fantus also scored on a penalty kick for the Warriors just after the halftime break.

“I thought our defense played well. We kept the game at our end of the field a lot of the game,” coach Dave Albion said.

The Warriors (1-0) will play at Western Mennonite on Monday.

South Albany 2, Madison 2

The visiting Rebels had their chances to gain the win, but came away with a tie against the Senators.

Lalo Mendoza scored from 19 yards out in the 20th minute, curling a free kick into the upper-right corner. Rian Surendra scored on a break-away goal during the 65th minute. South had several shots on goal in the final minutes, but could not put one through.

The Rebels play today at Canby.

Girls soccer

Willamette 6, Lebanon 0

Three of the six Wolverine goals came on penalty kicks, as Lebanon coach Rusty Gorham played a lot of girls at new positions.

Gorham praised midfielder Katelyn Tracy as a standout in the tough loss.

Lebanon plays Tuesday at Philomath.
