Oregon State lands highly touted baseball class

CORVALLIS — The Oregon State baseball team’s recruiting class for the 2009 season has been ranked 12th nationally by Collegiate Baseball as announced by the publication Tuesday.

Assistant coach Marty Lees is in his second year as the team’s recruiting coordinator, and for the second straight season, has brought a top-15 recruiting class to campus. Last season’s recruiting class was ranked third nationally by both Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America.

The Beavers have 14 incoming recruits for the 2009 season, including one transfer, six freshmen and seven junior college transfers. Oregon State’s lone transfer is right-handed pitcher Tyler Waldron from Pacific. The team’s six freshmen are: Infielders Carter Bell (Courtenay, B.C.) and Kyle Beverley (Salt Lake City), outfielders Blake Gibbs (Bellevue, Wash.), Ryan Gorton (Tigard) and Brent Warren (Robins, Iowa) and right-handed pitcher Sam Gaviglio (Ashland).

Oregon State’s junior college transfers are: Catchers Michael Chiarelli (Skagit Valley CC) and Bryce Starratt (Sacramento CC), infielders Jared Norris (Yavapai College), Stefen Romero (Pima CC), Adalberto Santos (New Mexico JC) and Max Shupe (San Jose CC) and outfielder Logan Lotti (Sierra JC).

The Beavers began fall workouts on Sept. 11 with 39 players on the roster. On Thursday, the team will participate in a public intrasquad scrimmage at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The workout begins at 1 p.m. and is scheduled to last approximately two hours.
