SCIO - A damp field and two weeks away from competition couldn’t slow Loggers running back Coulter Mastenbroek as the junior ran for 284 yards and two touchdowns in Scio’s 42-0 win over visiting Chiloquin.

Mastenbroek, who missed last week’s 34-16 loss at Lost River due to illness, opened the Scio scoring spree with a 72-yard run up the sideline on the Loggers’ second play from scrimmage.

Sophomore Brandon Rezentes plunged three yards into the endzone on the final play of the first quarter after Mastenbroek tallied his second 70-plus-yard scoring play of the period.

Mastenbroek added another touchdown from six yards out in the second quarter after the Loggers blocked a Panthers punt to give the homecoming crowd a 26-0 halftime lead.

“We finally were as physical as we were hoping to be,” said Scio coach Kyle Braa.

“We are very young and inexperienced but we stress being physical out there. If you watch one of our football games, one of the first things that you will see is our o-line pushing that line of scrimmage.”

Behind Scio’s dominating offensive line, Rezentes pounded the ball inside 16 times for 80 yards while Mastenbroek gained 231 first half yards on the ground.

The trend continued late in the game as running back Josh Rieger handled the ball for the majority of the second half. The sophomore totaled 75 yards on 12 carries while adding two fourth quarter touchdowns.

“Our offensive line is amazing but that’s just our backs,” said Mastenbroek of his fellow backfield mates’ performance.

“I was really, really sick last week so I tried to make up for it tonight. I feel a lot better about our team after seeing (our running backs) tonight.”

Braa feels a lot better after seeing Mastenbroek back on the field tonight.

“After last week without Coulter, it’s good to have him back,” said Braa after the game. “He played great for us but it was also our defense that played great. We just played a lot better this week.”

Scio (3-2) will try to build on their momentum as they begin Tri-River league play against Santiam on Friday.
