City hears plan for shopping center

Canada-based SmartCentres described its plan to the Albany City Council to construct six commercial buildings east of the freeway Wednesday in a public hearing.

After the two-and-half-hour session, councilors agreed to postpone until Oct. 22 deliberations and a tentative decision on the proposed site plan for the 26-acre site south of Santiam Highway and west of Goldfish Farm Road.

Councilors said they were overwhelmed by all of the information presented.

Speculation is that the largest building on the property could be a Wal-Mart store.

Read more about the hearing on the web later today and in this afternoon’s Democrat-Herald.
