West Albany defensive lineman John Braun runs down Lebanon running back Adam Colwell.
Bulldogs stand firm

LEBANON - Four weeks into the Mid-Willamette Conference football schedule, there’s still a zero on the scoreboard for West Albany’s opponents.

The top-ranked Bulldogs remained perfect on defense Thursday with a 55-0 win against Lebanon at Heath Stadium.

And the West offense held its own as well, with Anthony LaCoste rushing for 180 yards and four touchdowns. Reese Miller added one touchdown pass and another on the ground.

West (7-0, 4-0 Mid-Willamette) held Lebanon (1-6, 0-4) to just eight first downs, including one on a penalty. The Warriors had just one yard rushing and 36 total yards at halftime as the Bulldogs led 33-0.

“Our goal is to play as hard as we can every single time and keep that zero,” said Miller, a senior quarterback and defensive back.

Miller added that there’s an expectation of the junior varsity players to keep that going.

“It gets a little anxious, but I think it’s good for our young guys to see what varsity play is like,” he said. “I think it makes our program better.”

The JVs got a little less time than normal because of a close game Wednesday. Players are allowed just five quarters of playing time a week, and many of the West JV players had just one quarter available for Thursday.

The West defense was again led by its line, where Oregon State-bound senior John Braun and his teammates allowed the Warriors just 45 yards rushing for the game.

“Our front line was our main goal this week, closing the gaps on their running plays,” Braun said.

Josiah Olson led Lebanon with 29 yards on 14 carries. Zack Ryan and Brad Stagnoli added 14 yards apiece on three carries.

“It’s not that we broke down that much, it’s that they’re a very good team,” Lebanon coach Rob Allen said. “They made some things happen.”

Allen said his team played hard but wasn’t able to execute consistently or match the Bulldogs’ team speed.

West took its first possession at the Lebanon 21 after the Warriors were unable to get off a punt. LaCoste scored on the next play.

After a Will Bussard interception of Lebanon quarterback Colton Scavone, the Bulldogs were headed for a second score before Miller fumbled the ball away.

But Miller didn’t make that mistake twice. He protected the ball with both hands on a 14-yard touchdown run on West’s next drive, carrying a Lebanon defender the final few yards for the score.

“I didn’t want a repeat of history ... I was a little bit careless,” Miller said. “My job is to take care of that ball, so I wanted to make sure I got in there, and I put two hands on it.”

West’s Brian Gamboa also had an interception.
