The Oregon Department of Transportation is reminding winter recreationists that starting Saturday, and lasting until April 30, permits are required for parking in Sno-Park areas.

The season is beginning two weeks earlier than in previous years, due to changes in state law.

The Sno-Park program helps provide for snow removal at about 100 winter recreation areas across the state. There are Sno-Parks throughout Oregon’s mountain passes and in most ski, snowmobile and snow play areas. Each is posted with signs identifying them as a Winter Recreation Area.

There are three types of permits: a $20 seasonal permit; a $7 three-consecutive-day permit; and a $3 daily permit. They can be purchased at all DMV offices and at winter resorts, sporting goods stores and other retail outlets. (Private agents may charge a service fee.)

A survey of Sno-Park users shows that an annual permit is used more than 13 times, resulting in a savings of $19 compared to buying daily permits.

Valid Sno-Park permits must displayed in a vehicle’s windshield. Parking without one may result in a $30 fine.
