Truck driver arrested after falling asleep, crashing in I-5 construction zone

A commercial truck driver was arrested Thursday morning after he fell asleep while driving through an Interstate 5 construction work zone north of Brownsville and struck a concrete barrier, Oregon State Police investigators said.

According to the preliminary investigation by Oregon State Police, the 2005 Kenworth truck driven by Steven M. Cook, 40, from Portland was traveling south in the Sodom Ditch bridge replacement work zone where nine construction workers were working on an adjacent bridge protected by a concrete barrier.

Cook reportedly fell asleep and crashed into the concrete barrier near two of the workers who were about 10 to 12 feet away. After impact, the truck and trailer slid along the barrier wall at highway speeds before coming to a stop.

Cook was arrested for reckless driving and recklessly endangering highway workers. He was transported to the Linn County Jail.

The right southbound lane was closed for approximately two hours while crews worked to remove the truck. The Oregon Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.

Troopers from the OSP Albany Area Command office are continuing the investigation.
