Johnson makes up for missing game

Oregon Notebook

By Jesse Sowa
Albany Democrat-Herald

CORVALLIS — Oregon senior running back Jeremiah Johnson felt like he needed to make up for some lost ground in this year’s Civil War after missing the 2007 game with a knee injury.

Johnson did that and more, rushing for 219 yards and a touchdown in Oregon’s 65-38 win against Oregon State at Reser Stadium.

“You could say I stacked two games into one,” said Johnson, who passed 1,000 yards for the season with his effort. “It feels great contributing to this year’s squad and getting the victory.“

TD record

Johnson’s backfield counterpart, junior LeGarrette Blount, broke the Oregon school record for rushing touchdowns in a single season with his 9-yard score in the first quarter.

Blount was tied with Saladin McCullough’s 15 touchdowns in 1996.

Blount and Johnson helped Oregon set a single-season school record for team rushing yards. The 385 total Saturday brought the Ducks’ total to 3,329 for the year, breaking the 3,272 from 2007.

Steady Flint

Oregon kickers were 1 of 5 on field goals over the last four Civil Wars, including 0 of 5 in regulation, entering Saturday’s game.

But Morgan Flint changed that statistic.

The walk-on from Bend was 3-for-3 on kicks of 38, 22 and 25 yards, all in the first half.

Putting up 50

The Ducks have now scored 50 or more points in four of five games over the last two seasons when they’ve had more than a week to prepare for a game.

The lone instance where that didn’t happen came in 2007, when Oregon lost 34-24 at Arizona as quarterback Dennis Dixon was lost for the season with a knee injury during the game.

Climbing record

With three more rushing touchdowns Saturday, Oregon increased its single-season school record to 42. The previous record was 32, set in 2007.

Points mark falls

Oregon’s 65 points broke a record for most points for a team in a Civil War. The Ducks’ 56 in a 56-21 win in Eugene in 2005 was the previous mark.

The combined 103 points was also a new record. The old record was the 85 points scored in the 1998 game, when Oregon State won 44-41 in overtime in Corvallis.
