Authorities aren’t releasing any additional information about what they called the accidental shooting Tuesday afternoon of a 21-year-old woman at the E.E. Wilson Wildlife Management Area north of Corvallis.
Lt. Greg Ridler, the public information officer for the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, said the identity of the victim and other details of the incident will not be made public until at least next week.
The woman was taken to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center.
Hospital officials said they are not releasing the victim’s name or details of her condition at the specific request of her family.
Ridler said the woman was struck by pellets from a shotgun in her buttocks at close range at 1:45 p.m. The initial report was that the woman, who was in the company of a family member and friend, walked in front of the male acquaintance as he was loading a shotgun, Ridler said.
The shotgun accidentally discharged, he said, striking the victim with numerous pellets. Ridler said authorities were examining the gun, looking for clues as to why it might have discharged.
Ridler said the woman was conscious but in pain as she was taken to the hospital. The investigation into the incident is continuing, he added.
