CORVALLIS - A doctoral student from Oregon State University was killed in a car crash Saturday night on Highway 101 near Seal Rock. Four other people were taken to a hospital.

Gayatri Shrivastava, 25, of Indore, India, was studying chemistry at OSU, according to a university Web site.

She was the passenger in a Toyota Camry that swerved out of control on the roadway, spinning into an oncoming lane of traffic, hitting a guardrail and then being struck by a van.

The crash occurred at about 7:15 p.m., and Shrivastava died after being taken to a Newport hospital.

The driver of the car she was in, Sangeet Kumar Lal, 29, of Corvallis, was taken to that facility with serious injuries, and then transferred to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center for further treatment. He was discharged Sunday.

The other passengers in the car, Mrinmoy Saha, 23, of Corvallis and Arnab Mukherjee, 29, of Baltimore, received minor injuries from the crash. They spent the night at Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport and were discharged Sunday morning, according to a nursing supervisor at the facility.

The driver of the van, Douglas Howard, 52, of Battle Ground, Wash., also was taken to the Newport hospital, where he was treated and released.

According to an Oregon State Police news release, Lal was northbound on Highway 101, and as he drove on a downhill, sharp right curve, his outside tires left the roadway. He overcorrected and the car spun, hit the guardrail and continued to spin as it was struck in the rear section.

Shrivastava was the left rear passenger.

All of the occupants in the Toyota were wearing seatbelts.

The highway was closed for about four hours because of the crash. Oregon State Police were continuing to investigate the crash Sunday.

Shrivastava was a member of Mas Subramanian’s research group at OSU, and her focus area was nanomaterial synthesis.
