NEWS & NOTES

Five stars: Corvallis Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center received five stars for overall quality from a new rating system for nursing homes in the U.S. The rating system, called Nursing Home Compare, was unveiled last month by the federal government's Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the agency that runs the health care programs for seniors. Nursing Home Compare rates every nursing home in the country for performance in three categories: health inspections, staffing and quality measures. In addition, each facility is given an overall score. The rating scale is between one and five stars, with five stars being the best. Corvallis Manor, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2008, is located at 160 N.E. Conifer in Corvallis. It is part of the network of Pinnacle Healthcare Inc., a family-owned and operated provider of long-term care services based in Oregon.

Officers and board: The 2009 slate of officers and board members for Da Vinci Days has been announced. Lainie Turner, marketing consultant and co-owner of Darkside Cinema, was elected as board president. Other officers for 2009 will be Kavinda Arthenayake, OSU Conferences and Special Events, vice president; Bonnie Humphrey-Anderson, OSU Federal Credit Union, treasurer; Michael Laport, Peak Internet, secretary; and Curtis Wright, retired marketing executive, past-president. Board members are Barbara Bull, community volunteer; Michael Dalton, Oregon State University; Robert England, Salem Mac Store; Shari Maksud, Corvallis School District; Kathleen Petrucela, retired; Laurie Russell, Insights Now; and Jose Vega, Datalogic Mobile, Inc.

Certification: Jillian Hernan Fee, PharmD, BCPS, is the first Samaritan Health Services employee to earn certification from the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties. To become a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist, underwritten by the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, Fee met stringent education and experience requirements and passed a six-hour, 200-question board exam. Fee provides anticoagulation services to cardiology patients at the Samaritan Heart & Vascular Institute on the campus of Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center. She plans to continue to build on her education in order to keep up her certification.
