NETL promotion: The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) has selected David Alman as a supervisory general engineer. Alman, who works at NETL in Albany, will be continuing his 16-year long career as an engineer with NETL. Most recently, he was a materials research engineer, working on projects aimed at developing metallic alloys that are more resistant to the high temperature and corrosive environments associated with solid oxide fuel cells and advanced coal combustion.

In his new position, Alman will lead projects that address materials challenges associated with emerging energy technologies. A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Alman resides in Corvallis. He holds a Ph.D. in materials engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.

Honored twice: Willamette & Pacific Railroad recently was named recipient of two President's Awards from the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association. The awards will be presented at the ASLRRA's annual convention in Las Vegas on April 27. W&P was one of seven railroads recognized for safety accomplishments in 2008. It was only the second time in the history of the award that it has presented two awards to one railroad. Willamette & Portland was honored for achieving the lowest Frequency/Severity Index (FSI) in the 250,000-plus man hours category and also for logging the most man hours while maintaining a zero FSI. The awards are sponsored by BNSF Railway Co., CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern Corp. and Union Pacific Railroad.

Rotary grants: Altrusa, Helping Hands Gleaners and Mid-Valley Gleaners have been named as the recipients of 2009 Discretionary Grants from the Rotary Club of Albany. Each group receives a $1,000 grant to carry out their community projects. The recipients were chosen from among nearly 20 applicants. Club president Ed Hodney made the announcement. Founded in 1928, the Rotary Club of Albany is the oldest Rotary club in Linn County and has 65 members. There are 33,000 Rotary clubs located in over 200 countries worldwide.

New team member: Preston Kahl a real estate sales professional in Corvallis has joined Keller Williams Mid-Willamette Valley Market Center it was announced by Terri Woods, team leader of the company. Kahl has an extensive background in real estate and is a graduate of Pro Schools for Real Estate. He is a certified new homes sales professional. He will work out of the Keller Williams office in Avery Square, 815 N.W. Ninth St., Suite L-195 in Corvallis.
