Whether you want to be low key or scream 'til your tonsils bleed, there's something for everyone this Halloween

"As soon as they start going in, before they even see it, they start screaming," said Glenda Davis.

Davis and her husband, John, run Muddy Creek Corn Maze at their farm south of Corvallis, on Llewellyn Road, between Highway 99W and Bellfountain Road.

Their cornfield has been carefully sculpted throughout this summer's growing season into a mural of a tractor crossing the fields at sunset.

From far above, the massive green masterpiece looks almost serene, but venture closer - down to ground level - and you'll see what all the screaming is about.

Muddy Creek's 6-acre corn maze crawls with 20 monsters brought to life by volunteers in the maze.

To add to the terror, visitors on Halloween night can use only the light of a glow stick to work their way through the labyrinth.

"Oh, you definitely get lost in it," Davis said. "It's no different than the daytime."

Lest guests think twice about entering, she reassures them that there are people in the maze that can help out lost parties.

This is the sixth year the Davises have built a corn maze.

"It turned out to be a really fun one this year," Davis said. "It's pretty challenging. It can take an hour to get through it at night."

According to Davis, some patrons always try to memorize the map before entering, usually to no avail.

"If you don't keep track of every little thing, it's over," Davis said. "The first few turns and then you're done."

On Halloween night the maze will be open - for those who dare to enter - from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Admission is $9 per person. For more information, call 740-3869 or see www.muddycreekmaze.com.

For those looking for something a little less disorienting that yields more candy per mile, there is always the possibility of old-fashioned trick-or-treating, as well.

If you don't have children of your own, borrow one from a friend on Friday, Oct. 31, and head to downtown Corvallis, North Albany or Lebanon to visit participating businesses starting at

2 p.m. in Corvallis, 3 p.m. in North Albany, and 3:30 p.m. in downtown Lebanon. There will also be trick-or-treating starting at 4:30 p.m. at the Lebanon Plaza.

If you're walking the streets of Corvallis in search of candy, be sure to stop by the Musicafe Rock School's Second Annual Rockin' Haunted House for some sweet-sounding songs from

4 to 6 p.m. at 139 S.W. Third St.

You'll have until 6 p.m. to make off with as much candy as you can from local businesses, just in time to head over to the "Safe and Sane Trick-or-Treating" event from 6 to 7:30 p.m. inside the Heritage Mall in Albany.

Or, if you live closer to Corvallis, you can check out the All-City Halloween Party at 7 p.m., in the parking garage of the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library.

Let's say you're looking for a fun family event without the overtones of … well, Halloween. If that's the case never fear. There are several "harvest carnivals" to choose from as well.

Calvary Chapel is sponsoring such an event from

4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Benton County Fairgrounds for children aged 3 to 12 with face-painting, games, fire truck rides, petting zoo, food and candy. For information, see www.harvestfestival.org.

Another similarly themed event will take place starting at 6 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 1115 S.W. 28th Ave. in Albany. For information call 928-3505.

Want to watch scary movies, but not have to answer the door all night? Darkside Cinema is hosting a Halloween double feature of 1941's "The Devil Bat" and 1958's "House on Haunted Hill. For information, see www.darksidecinema.com.

If you're thinking that your costume is too good to waste check out the annual costume contest at 3 p.m. Friday at South Pacific Auto and RV Sales and Service, 5040 S. Pacific Blvd., in Albany.

In Corvallis, local music venues FireWorks and Bombs Away Cafe will also host costume contests at 6 p.m. and midnight, respectively.
