People arrested are innocent unless proven otherwise in court. Initial charges often change as a case progresses.
Albany police
Hit and run — Albany police tracked down and arrested a man Thursday accused of running away after backing his vehicle into a shopping cart that held a baby.
According to a dispatch report, the vehicle backed into the cart in the Albany Fred Meyer parking lot about 10:21 a.m. The man in the vehicle got out and left on foot, leaving the vehicle. Police caught up with a man matching his description a few minutes later at Hometown Furniture.
Sean Patrick McEnany, 21, of Albany was charged with failure to perform the duties of a driver. He was lodged in the Linn County Jail. The baby did not require medics.
Assault — A family member called police just before midnight Thursday to report a juvenile male out of control and hitting family members.
The teenager left the home in the 5000 block of Pacific Boulevard S.W. before police arrived. According to a dispatch report, family members said someone had given the youth a bottle of vodka. The father took the boy’s cell phone away and the boy got his father in a headlock and started hitting him.
Police later caught up with the boy and he was referred to the Linn County Juvenile Department on assault charges.
Lebanon police
Dogs taken — Lebanon police removed 10 dogs Wednesday from a home in the 500 block of Harrison Street after a caretaker reported concern for the 68-year-old man who lived there.
According to a police report, the resident had been injured and his caretaker did not believe he could adequately care for himself. The caretaker said one of the dogs chewed through the resident’s bandages and reopened his wound. Senior services had been contacted but the man reportedly refused to let them inside.
Linn County Dog Control responded about 2:20 p.m. Wednesday and removed 10 dogs from the residence, leaving three adult dogs and a litter of puppies. Police said the dogs were not being neglected and the man did not require further medical care.
Linn County Sheriff
Suspect chase — Linn deputies responding to a report Thursday morning of a stolen Toyota pickup ended up chasing the vehicle and then the driver, eventually using a Taser on him as he hid under a porch in Sweet Home.
According to a dispatch report, the Toyota was reported stolen about 8 a.m. from the Brush Creek area, heading toward Highway 228. Deputies then heard the vehicle broke down in the 38000 block of Highway 228.
The driver reportedly got out and began running west as deputies approached. They chased him for several minutes, eventually catching up as he crawled under the porch of a residence at 25863 A Brush Creek. They used a Taser on the man and took him into custody.
Ryan Kelly Rikala, 23, of Sweet Home was charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle, two counts of second-degree burglary, third-degree escape, resisting arrest, two counts of second-degree criminal trespass, two counts of third-degree criminal mischief, possession of burglar’s tools and parole violation. He was lodged in the Linn County Jail.
Family rescues man — Deputies received a call about 2 p.m. Thursday of a man in the river near Oupor Drive, but by the time they arrived, the man had been pulled out.
According to a dispatch report, two men were walking along the river when one went out onto a wet log and slipped into the water. He was swept downstream to another log but was not able to get out on his own.
The first man jumped in and was able to get his friend to shore, where family members pulled him out. He was in the water approximately 5 to 10 minutes but did not require medical treatment.
Sweet Home Police
Dog shot — A caller contacted Sweet Home police about 11 a.m. Tuesday to report someone had shot her dog while in her yard at 4605 Long St. that morning. Police confirmed the dog, a puppy, possibly a schnauzer mix, was shot with a high-caliber pellet gun. The animal was taken to a veterinarian for treatment and the investigation is continuing.
Fight — Officers responded to a report of a fight at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday in the 1300 block of Ninth Avenue. Police took a male involved in the argument to Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital for a mental evaluation. No one was injured.
