Albany City Council candidate Glenda Fleming has pulled out of the three-way race for Jeff Christman's seat in Ward III.

Fleming notified the city last Friday of her decision, the final day to drop out so her name would not appear on the November election ballot.

With Fleming gone, Christman and political newcomer Frank Frenzel are the remaining candidates.

Fleming, an industrial chemist, said she severely injured her back on Aug. 3 but filed for election anyway, thinking she would improve enough to run a campaign. The dates for filing for the council were between Aug. 5 and 20.

Fleming, who previously was appointed to the council and was defeated by Christman four years ago in an election bid, said she hurt her back in a "freak accident."

She said she was yanking the sheets from her bed and pulling off her pillowcases, when she dropped a pillowcase on the floor.

"I bent over to pick it up, the floor is bare floor and I bent down to pick it up and it was like I was on ball bearings, and I went down," she said.

At first, Fleming thought she only suffered some soft tissue damage but after undergoing medical tests she learned that she had suffered a compressed fracture.

Fleming said she expects her pain to dissipate entirely in six months to a year.

"You haven't seen the last of me," she said, referring to a possible council run later.

Meanwhile, she is supporting Frenzel.

"He has a good grasp of the important livability issues for the city," Fleming said.

Frenzel is a crew chief in the city of Lebanon water section. He serves on Lebanon's safety committee and is president of AFSCME Local 2043 in Lebanon.

The Ward III boundaries are south of Pacific Boulevard and east of Geary Street plus Chartwell Station and the Pineway Subdivision.
