People arrested are innocent unless proven otherwise in court. Initial charges often change as a case progresses.
Albany Police
Hit and run - Just after 3 a.m. on Sunday, a Jefferson man witnessed a hit and run and followed the driver to Albany, where he was arrested. Witness Kyle Miller, 30, told police he saw a teal Ford Mustang hit his neighbor's fence and keep driving. He then followed the car all the way to Columbus Street in Albany, where he held the driver until police arrived.
The hit-and-run driver, Paul Taylor Hartzell, 18, told police he had bent down to light a cigarette and struck the fence. He then got scared and left the scene. He did not have a license or insurance and had been driving his girlfriend's car, which sustained major damage. Marion County Sheriff's Office took over and issued several citations to Hartzell.
Not so fast - At about 8:25 p.m. Sunday a young man allegedly attempting to steal sunglasses from a business in the 2210 block of Waverly Drive S.E. reached behind the counter and grabbed a stun gun. The clerk, along with some other off-duty clerks present, was able to get the stun gun away from the man. The man ran off before he could be apprehended.
Under the influence of McDonald's - A witness called police at about 10:45 p.m. Sunday saying a blue Ford F150 pickup was "swerving all over the road" in the 35600 block of Santiam Highway. Police had the man pulled over in a parking lot at the intersection of Santiam Highway and Goldfish Farm Road. The man was not drunk. He had been attempting to eat a meal from McDonald's when he spilled it in his lap. He had difficulty operating the stick shift while trying to get food from out of his lap and legs. The driver was advised to find a spot to park and eat his meal.
Linn County Sheriff
Found in potty - A call came in at 3:19 a.m. Sunday about the driver of a vehicle in a ditch and a power pole down near the Cottonwoods Market.
According to an initial police report, here is what happened: Driver Daniel Robert Kroesing, was driving toward Lebanon from Albany on Highway 20 just past Highway 226 when he drove off the road and struck a power pole, knocking it to the ground. He and his passenger then abandoned the 1993 Ford Escort and locked themselves in a port-a-potty located in front of the Cottonwoods Market. Kroesing, 31, was being arrested for hit and run, driving while suspended and driving without insurance when deputies found meth, scales and baggies on him. Charges of possession and delivery of meth were added. His passenger, Heather Ann Campbell, 23, was also charged with meth possession.
Burglary - A man reported the theft of a set of wedding rings valued at $14,000 from the 1460 block of Cascade Drive Sunday. He suspects his ex-girlfriend.
Oregon State Police
Bend pair injured in Hwy. 242 crash - A Bend couple was seriously injured Sunday afternoon when the motorcycle they were riding on crashed into the side of a passenger vehicle that turned in front of them on Highway 242 about three miles west of the viewpoint. Oregon State Police provided this account:
At about 4 p.m., a 1999 Subaru Legacy driven by William F. Foster, 51, of Veneta, was westbound on the highway near milepost 76 when it attempted to turn left toward a highway turnout. The Subaru turned directly into the path of an eastbound 2004 Honda motorcycle operated by Rodney Earl Kenter, 52, of Bend.
Kentner and his wife, Jeanne T. Kentner, 47, were both ejected and seriously injured and were transported by helicopter to a in Bend hospital. Foster was not injured. He was using safety restraints. Foster was cited for dangerous left turn. The highway was closed about 1 hour, 45 minutes.
Scio Fire
The Scio Rural Fire District sent two engines and two brush rigs to what is believed to have been an arson fire at 40200 Rodgers Mountain Loop at 3:15 a.m. today, according to Fire Chief Duane Miller.
Piles of ryegrass straw about 15 bales long, 4 bales wide and double stacked were destroyed. The straw was owned by Doerfler Farms of Sublimity. Miller said arson is suspected because the bales were in a field away from possible ignition sources.
Estimated loss was approximately $2,000.
