Young artists and thespians interested in honing their respective crafts are invited to weeklong art and drama camps next month in Albany.
Art camp, for students entering grades 4-9, will be July 6-10. Drama camp, for students entering grades 4-6, will be July 13-17. Both camps will be from 9 a.m. to noon at First United Methodist Church, 1115 28th Ave. S.W., Albany.
The cost for each camp is $60 per camper, which includes daily snacks and a T-shirt. All materials will be provided.
Director Meghan Lloyd, 20, of Albany began directing drama camps two summers ago to earn a Girl Scout Gold Award. The following summer, she continued with the camps through the former Conservatory of Music Education. When that school closed, she decided to continue the camps privately. She organized two earlier this summer.
"It's something I love and wanted to share with the kids of our community," she said.
Lloyd will be a junior this fall at Willamette University, where she is an art major and plans to minor in theater.
Lloyd's "Creative Camps" for drama students include a field trip to the Albany Civic Theater. Campers work each day on a show they perform for friends and family at the end of the week. Each camper has a speaking part in the play, with various parts for more or less experienced actors. They also paint backdrops, help with costumes, and learn about various aspects of the theater.
At art camp, each day campers will learn a little bit about an artist, movement or style and then try out that style for themselves making their own original works of art. For instance, Lloyd said, one day she plans to have campers learn a little about Andy Warhol and pop art, and then have them make their own pop art paintings using acrylic paints, a medium used by many pop artists.
"I intend to become a teacher, so running these camps is an excellent experience for me and the kids love it," she said.
