Liberty students read for Heifer International

Students in third, fourth and fifth grades at Liberty Elementary School have begun a "Read to Feed" fundraiser they hope will bring in enough money to buy livestock for families in need in other countries.

The children are taking pledges for minutes read, pages read, books read or other goals met through Sept. 28. Call the school at 967-4578 to make a pledge.

Proceeds will go to Heifer International, a nonprofit organization that purchases farm animals for poor families in countries around the world. The offspring from these animals are then given to other families in need.

Fifth-graders at Liberty are studying Ecuador and trying to raise money for alpacas to send to families there. Third- and fourth-graders are studying Africa and are raising money for goats to send to families there.

More information on Heifer International can be found at www.heifer.org.

Tech Time will feature Library2Go system

Albany Public Library's September Tech Time will focus on showing patrons how to use Library2Go, a source of audio books and other databases and resources online. Tech Time is at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Main Library, 1390 Waverly Drive S.E.

Library2Go provides access to more than 2,000 audio books that patrons can download to personal computers or MP3 players (except iPods). Many of the books may also be burned to a compact disc.

Databases are also available at the library to help businesses stay in touch with trades and help students with school projects. They include three online encyclopedias with audio and video components, updates of contemporary magazine articles, and more than 10,000 full-text magazine titles and archives. Library databases are available on public-use computers in the library, as well as from home and school computers with an Albany Public Library card.

For more information, contact John Burton, reference librarian, at 917-7580, ext. 4702.
