Mike Brenneman of Scio will have his rare 1923 Fordson tractor on display at the Linn County Fair this year.
The Fordson will join nine other antique tractors indoors and in one place this year, said Tim McQueary, chairman of the fair board. This will be the third year for the event.
"In the past, we've put them around the front parking lot, but now we're going to move them indoors in the exhibition hall. It will be a static display for the run of the fair," he said.
Brenneman's tractor is a four-cylinder built by Henry Ford's company.
"Ford was trying to give his son, Edsel, a job so he got the job of building tractors, and that's why it's called a Fordson," Brenneman said.
Ford wanted to dominate the tractor market in the same way he had the automobile industry, Brenneman said. So in 1915, he started working on a tractor design that could be mass produced.
By April 1918, the Henry Ford and Son Tractor Co. became a big success with 64 tractors produced each day, he said. By July, 131 Fordsons rolled out of the Dearborn Plant each day. The tractors sold for about $875.
Brenneman has 13 tractors and two are Fordsons on steel wheels. He also has three Oliver tractors, an International Harvester and several John Deeres.
Brenneman, 53, who says he knows nothing about farming, has collected tractors for about 10 years.
"Some people collect only brand name, but I like tractors so I collect everything," he said. "I have a 1923 and a 1936 Fordson."
Brenneman obtained the 1923 model from Don Studer of Jefferson, who'd bought it for about $500 from a wrecking yard a decade and a half ago. Studer restored the exterior and repainted it, and Brenneman got it running again.
Brenneman owns Albany Wheel and Exhaust, where "we do fabrication, hot rod stuff and general repair," he said.
River Rhythms concert at fair
If you want to see country musician Craig Morgan at the Linn County Fair but don't want to pay fair admission, arrive before 5 p.m.
After that time, fair visitors must pay to get in.
Morgan's concert starts at 8:30 p.m. at the Linn County Fair & Expo Center, 3700 Knox Butte Road.
His performance takes the place of the regular River Rhythms concert that normally would be at Monteith Riverpark. All Thursday concerts at the park are free.
Unlike at Monteith, concertgoers cannot take lawn chairs to the fairgrounds.
