Vince Cappalo Jr., an Albany radio broadcaster and community-spirited volunteer, died Saturday at Heartland Hospice House in Wilmington, Del.

Cappalo, 56, died of cancer after being diagnosed in December. He came to Albany in 1992 and had moved to New Castle, Del., last year.

Cappalo, who was born in New Castle on Sept. 10, 1952, worked for KRKT, KGAL and KSHO radio stations.

"He was a skillful marketer and a true professional with his talents and his voice," said Shelly Garrett, the director of the Lebanon Area Chamber of Commerce. Garrett worked with Cappalo at KGAL.

"Kids seem to be his passion," she said. "He was devoted to the Boys & Girls Club of Albany, and he made them a lot of money."

Cappalo was master of ceremonies at the River Rhythms concert series several times, served on the Boys & Girls Club of Albany board, had been on the city of Albany Budget Committee and was on a number of committees at the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce.

"He helped the chamber with the Businesses on Display trade show and served on the marketing committee," said Janet Steele, the chamber's executive director.

"I knew and respected Vince as someone who truly enjoyed his time in Albany and truly enjoyed giving to others," she said. "He was a huge influence because of his work with radio, and he knew hundreds, if not thousands of business people."

Cappalo also served as an assistant to state Rep. Andy Olson, R-Albany.

He is survived by his mother, Audrey Cappalo of New Castle; daughter Jennifer Biancucci of Clarks Summit, Pa.; son Jeremy Cappalo of Milton, Fla.; and fiancé Dee Merica of Boothwyn, Pa.

There will be a Mass of Christian Burial Thursday in New Castle. A celebration of his life is being planned in Albany with the date and place to be announced later.

Memorials may be sent to Heartland Hospice House, 5661 Ochletree Lane, Wilmington, DE 19808. Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home in Wilmington is handling arrangements.
