Mike Hurley is trying to save second base. And we're not talking about baseball.
He has organized a poker tournament to be held Saturday to raise money to help send three of his family members to "The 3-Day" - a Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer walk being held in Boston July 24-26.
His wife, Erin, is a "previvor." She tested positive for BRCA, the breast cancer gene, and underwent preventative mastectomy.
Hurley's sister-in-law, Courtney Zinszer, is a two-time breast cancer survivor and has been cancer-free for 10 years.
His mother died of the disease when he was 11 years old.
Zinszer's daughter Sedona Lercara, 15, is also walking.
"They have to raise $2,300 apiece to be able to do it," Hurley said.
They are all part of Team Pink Wings, which has 21 members all over the country. Zinszer runs a pink ribbon products site (www.pinkwings.com) and Erin Hurley is a pediatrician for Kaiser Permanente in Salem.
"Right now Pink Wings is in sixth place out of about 550 teams for raising money," Mike Hurley said. "They have raised $36,000 so far."
Hurley, an apparatus operator for the Albany Fire Department, came up with the Poker Tournament to Help Save Second Base.
Everyone is invited to show up at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Albany Phoenix Inn, 3410 Spicer Road.
Buy-in is $20 for 3,000 chips and a $10 re-buy gets another 3,000 chips.
There will be high-hand prizes each hour including gift certificates to Starbucks, Coldstone Creamery and others.
