ALBANY POLICE

Shoes help the case - An Albany man was charged with 10 counts of identity theft after allegedly using a stolen credit card around town.

According to police, here's what happened:

A Salem man contacted the police department, saying his wallet was stolen Oct. 4 while he was at a downtown Albany business. He had collected bank statements and other information showing his credit card had been used at stores in Albany and at one in Lebanon.

On Wednesday, police tracked down video surveillance of the stolen card being used at a store at the Heritage Mall. The video showed the man using the card to purchase a pair of boots. The investigating officers didn't recognize the man in the video but went downtown, thinking he might work or live there, since a number of the other purchases were made in that area of town.

As they were parking their car, the officers spotted a man wearing the exact shoes they had seen in the surveillance video being purchased with the stolen credit card.

The man, Jeffery Melvin Wacek, 30, was taken to the police station and cited for identity theft and second-degree theft.

Some of the items purchased with the stolen credit card were recovered but others had been pawned, police said. All total, about $725 worth of items had been purchased on the card since it was stolen.

LEBANON POLICE

Truck hits construction fence - A pickup truck reportedly hit the construction fence in front of the future Justice Center in Lebanon around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, before fleeing westbound on Tangent Street. About 30 feet of fence was damaged, according to a police report, at a cost of about $1,000.

SWEET HOME POLICE

Possession of marijuana - A 17-year-old female was arrested around 3:20 p.m. Thursday in the 5300 block of Poplar Street and charged with possession of marijuana within 1,000 feet of a school.

Guns and marijuana - A 45-year-old man who was walking down Mountain View Road, near Ames Creek, carrying a rifle and shotgun was arrested around 9:15 p.m. Thursday and charged with possession of marijuana within 1,000 feet of a school. The man told police he was walking back into town after hunting during the day.
