The city of Albany will hold its 10th semi-annual river cleanup on Sept. 27. Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and should meet at Bowman Park to receive their tools and instructions.
Volunteers of any age may participate in the cleanup, held mostly along the city's waterways to remove debris and non-native plants.
After working, participants will meet back at Bowman Park for a free pizza lunch and to receive prizes. Those interested need only bring appropriate clothing and sturdy work shoes. The city will provide all other equipment.
While everyone is encouraged to pre-register, groups with more than five volunteers must pre-register no later than Sept. 24.
Albany's river cleanup is part of SOLV's Down by the Riverside program - a statewide effort modeled on the Great Oregon Beach Cleanups. River cleanups offer volunteers an opportunity to get involved in their community and help make the rivers healthier and safer for people, fish and wildlife.
In the past, up to 200 Albany volunteers removed litter along creeks and rivers.
Down by the Riverside is a partnership of the city, SOLV, and other local businesses that donate time and supplies.
