People arrested are innocent unless proven otherwise in court. Initial charges often change as a case progresses.
ALBANY POLICE
Ferret dispute - A woman showed up at her ex-boyfriend's house in the 3600 block of Thurston Street S.E. about 2:20 p.m. Thursday to reclaim her pet ferret. When she went into the house she saw the new girlfriend, who locked herself in the bathroom to protect her safety. The ex-girlfriend pushed in the bathroom door trying to get to the new girlfriend. The man finally got the former girlfriend outside. No injuries were reported, and there was no mention in the police log about the whereabouts of the ferret.
Child removed - Police pulled over a couple in a car with a toddler inside about 4:25 p.m. Thursday in the 1100 block of Lawnridge Street S.W. after someone reported the adults "seemed to be out of it," and the man had been talking to himself before getting in the car. Police smelled a strong odor of alcohol in the car, and the woman driver failed a field sobriety test.
The woman told police the couple had been drinking for the past four days and she has been a problem drinker for the last 43 years. The woman was taken to jail, and the child was placed in protective custody.
Journaling - A man who was reported to have parked in the 600 block of Hickory Street N.W. for the second night in a row about 10:30 p.m. Thursday told police he was there because it was too hot at home. He had no air-conditioning at his house. He said when it is hot he drives to someplace cool and well lit and writes in his journal. When the person who called police about the man heard what the man was doing, he was allowed to stay.
Napping - A man was discovered lying in a yard in the 600 block of Queen Avenue at 1 p.m. Thursday with his white pit bull tied to a tree nearby. When police first tried to wake the man he did not respond, but after a few taps on his shoulder he woke up. The man told police he was resting and had not been drinking. The man said he would move off to sleep in a park.
HALSEY-SHEDD FIRE
Smoke only - Firefighters responded to a call in the 30500 block of Fayetteville Drive about 6 p.m. Wednesday but found no fire. They did see smoke coming from an auger elevator in a grass seed warehouse. "A cable at the top of the elevator had wrapped around the shaft generating heat and creating smoke but no fire," said Chief Skip Smith. There was no damage.
Stove fire - Firefighters responded to a small electrical fire at 5:05 p.m. Thursday in the 100 block of W. G Street in Halsey. The homeowner was cleaning the stove when water got into a switch, shorting it out, Chief Skip Smith said. It smoked and created a small fire, causing minor damage. One engine responded.
LEBANON POLICE
Foul odor - A worker at Budget Truck Rental called police when a truck was returned Wednesday with a "very foul smell" and a liquid that looked like blood inside the box of the truck and on the undercarriage. Police investigated and determined the truck had been used to transport several rotten plants and the liquid was probably from the spoiled soil and water.
LINN COUNTY SHERIFF
Boat fire - Four men were rescued about 8:30 a.m. Thursday after the boat they were on in Green Peter Reservoir caught fire.
After going about a quarter mile, the motor was left to idle while the men prepared their fishing gear. There was an explosion at the port side of the engine cowling, blowing a "bowling-ball-sized hole" in the cowling at deck level. A flame shot out of the hole, igniting the boat. The men jumped overboard and were rescued by other boaters.
One man reported minor burns.
Fuel thefts - Two callers to the sheriff's office Thursday morning said fuel had been stolen from their farm equipment.
The first person said between 100 and 150 gallons of diesel, 40 gallons of gasoline and a fire extinguisher were taken during the night from tractors, trailers and combines in the 30000 block of American Can Drive near Halsey.
Another caller said 7 to 8 gallons of diesel and two CB radios were taken from his harvesting equipment in the 29000 block of Creek Drive. The thief had to cut into a tank to get the diesel, causing $500 in damage.
Items taken - Boat oars, a pumpkin-colored pontoon boat and a lock hasp were reported stolen about 6 p.m. Thursday from a storage unit in the 31500 block of S. Fifth near Lebanon. Total estimated value: $785.
SWEET HOME FIRE
Horse kick - Medics responded about 8 p.m. Thursday to the 40000 block of Mountain Home Drive northwest of Sweet Home to a report of 58-year-old woman being kicked by a horse. The woman was taken to the hospital in Corvallis. No other information was available.
SWEET HOME POLICE
And stay off - Someone called police from the 2200 block of Kalmia Street on Wednesday when their neighbors' remote-controlled car zoomed across their property. The operators were advised of the complaint and told police they would be mindful of the neighbors request.
Car v. bike - A 1990 Toyota pickup collided with a bicyclist at the intersection of 22nd Avenue and Long Street around 9:45 a.m. Thursday. The bicyclist was transported by medics with unknown injuries and a report was taken, but no citations were issued.
Back to Montana - A man was cited for a dangerous left turn and arrested for failure to carry and present a driver's license and providing false information to a police officer at about noon Thursday at the Towne Pump in the 800 block of Main Street. It was discovered he had warrants out of Montana for bail jumping - $50,000 bond, theft of property, failure to abide on forgery, possession of dangerous drugs and criminal mischief. James Dean Weedmark, 42, was booked and transported to the Linn County Jail for transport to Montana.
