Volunteers are invited to take part in cleanup efforts in downtown Lebanon and at Foster Lake this Saturday, both sponsored in part by SOLV and Oregon 150.
In Lebanon, the downtown revitalization group Partners for Progress and the city of Lebanon are preparing for Community Pride Day.
Check-ins begin at 8 a.m. at the corner of Grant and Main streets and work continues all day. Volunteers will be weeding, pressure washing, cleaning windows, spreading bark dust, and cleaning alleys and streets throughout the downtown area.
Dropoff locations will be available throughout the community for old electronic equipment, such as televisions and computers, and shredders will be on hand for document disposal. Electronics will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the large lot at Main and Grant, and the Shred-It truck, courtesy of the Linn Co Federal Credit Union, will be at the same location from noon to 2 p.m.
Hot dogs and chips will be available for lunch for all checked-in workers.
Community Pride Day is a partnership effort with Oregon 150 and SOLV, organizations that promote community cleanups statewide. For more information on the Lebanon effort, contact Dale Johnson at djohnson@ci.lebanon.
Partners for Progress is undertaking a variety of projects this year for downtown Lebanon. The group also is cleaning awnings throughout the downtown area on Friday and is organizing a farmer's market, which will be open Thursdays starting May 21 on Ash Street between Main and Second.
At Foster, volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday to help clean up shoreline areas around the lake as part of Oregon 150's "Take Care of Oregon Days" and the 14th Annual SOLV Down By The Riverside program.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Linn County Parks and Recreation Department have teamed up to sponsor and coordinate this event.
Orientation begins at 9 at the Sunnyside Park shelter on Foster Lake. From there, volunteers will be assigned selected areas around the lake to either pick up trash or remove invasive ivy.
Volunteers with boats are encouraged to bring them to help access remote shoreline areas. Volunteers are also urged to wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and long pants as much of the work will be on slippery or uneven terrain.
Gloves, tools, drinking water and snacks will be available throughout the day.
Families, groups and individuals may pre-register through SOLV's website by visiting www.solv.org/
programs/down_by_the_
riverside.asp. Scroll down to Linn County's listings then click on the "register now" button for Foster Lake Cleanup.
To get to Sunnyside Park travel six miles east of Sweet Home on Highway 20; turn onto Quartzville Road and travel 1.5 miles to Sunnyside Park. For more information on this event, contact Travis Chewning at the Willamette Valley Project Ranger Office at (541) 942-5631.
