Regular fitness classes offered by the Albany Parks & Recreation Department continue this winter with a new monthly session beginning Wednesday at Swanson Park Action Center, 705 Railroad St. S.E.
Classes include Step aerobics, Rep Reebok, Pilates, Muscle Tech, Turbokick, Strength & Endurance Training, Belly Core and Totally Abs. A special Beginning Step class is also available.
Cardio Dash is brand new. This half-hour class, from 12:10 to 12:40 p.m. Mondays and Fridays, will provide an opportunity for a quick workout during a busy day. Showers are available after the workout, if desired.
Classes are held Monday through Friday at a variety of times to fit all schedules. The cost for a month-long class varies from $6 to $32 for Albany residents and $8 to $42 for those who live outside the city limits.
Participants may also purchase a punch card for individual class visits. Each punch is $3.50 for residents or $4.50 for non-residents.
In addition, Parks & Recreation is offering a series of specialty health and fitness opportunities this winter. The details (costs are given for Albany residents/those living outside city limits):
• Personal Fitness Prescription: Make an appointment with Elke Asleson, a certified fitness instructor, for an hour-long consultation including a fitness evaluation and a recommendation of how to reach your fitness goals. Date and time determined individually. Cost: $35/$46.
• Move Beyond Pain: 2:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays, Jan. 8 through Feb. 8, Albany Senior Center, 489 Water Ave. N.W. This class teaches breath awareness and body awareness for effective chronic pain management using techniques developed by clinical exercise physiologist Namita Gandhi. Cost: $40/$53.
• Latin Aerobics: 6:35 to 7:35 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 16 through Feb. 13, Communicating Vessels Center, 238 Third Ave. S.E. With toning exercises and music, this five-week class can help you discover that working out can be fun. Cost: $35/$46.
• Boxing Boot Camp: 5 to 6 p.m. Mondays, Jan. 28 through Feb. 18, Counter Strikes Studios. This class is designed to improve cardiovascular fitness while performing aerobic and anaerobic training and drills. Routines will be set up based on each person's level of fitness. Cost: $45/$60.
The following classes are co-sponsored with and held at the Communicating Vessels Center, 238 Third Ave. S.E.:
• Wake Up Yoga: 7 to 8 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, Jan. 14 through Feb. 13. Cost: $44/$58.
• Vinyasa Yoga: 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturdays, Jan. 19 through Feb. 9. This style of yoga uses flowing sequences linked closely to smooth focused breathing. Cost: $30/$40.
• Beginning Meditation Workshop: 10:30 a.m. to noon Sundays, Jan. 27 through Feb. 10. In this workshop you will be given practical tools to help you practice meditation on your own. Cost: $20/$27.
People who live outside the city limits may purchase an out-of-city user card for $40 per year and receive the in-city price for Albany Parks & Recreation classes.
