LEBANON - The Lebanon Community School District has received 400 donated books in honor of Oregon's sesquicentennial celebration next year.

Donors gave $2,450 to purchase the three titles, each with an Oregon focus, for various age groups. All schools in Lebanon will join the reading project, which is part of "Oregon Reads 2009," sponsored by the Oregon Library Association.

Donors were Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital, Jerry Latimer Insurance Agency, Inc., OSU Federal Credit Union, John Dinges Landscape Co., the Lebanon Education Association, Kitty Jones, Wells Fargo Bank, Linn Gear, Altrusa, the Kiwanis Club and Linn-Co Federal Credit Union.

Starting in January 2009 and running through April, libraries across Oregon will hold a series of events and programming centering on the three books, "Stubborn Twig," a factual account of three generations of a Japanese-American family living in the Pacific Northwest, by Lauren Kessler; "Bat 6," an account of a critical softball game in 1949, by Virginia Euwer Wolff, and "Apples to Oregon," a tall tale on the Oregon trail, by Deborah Hopkinson.
