Big sale yields $22,000, but house, plane don’t sell

The 1998 Cessna Skylane did not sell at the 35-family garage sale this weekend on Peoria Road, and neither did the 1941 two-story house.

But the owners say they received serious inquiries about both, so they may sell yet.

Because of the unusual selection of items - mainly the plane but also the house - the D-H did a story on the sale Friday.

The families together made about $22,000 on the sale, an every-two-years occasion that dates back to 1982.

The biggest ticket item to go was a Honda 4-wheeler, said Dot Rohner, whose family hosted the sale in their warehouse. It sold for $2,250.

The Rohners also own the house that is for sale.

"Someone wanted to put money down and another was checking to see what it would cost to move the house," she said.

Members of the Rohner family built the four-bedroom house after they were forced to move from the small community of Wells to make way for the construction of Camp Adair during World War II. They are selling the home for $15,000 or best offer.

Exclusive farm use zoning does not permit two homes on the property, so the family wants the old house moved off so they can build a new one.

Someone from Canada is interested in the plane, which belongs to the Robert Macpherson estate, said Monica Macpherson, daughter-in-law of the former owner. The estate wants to sell the plane for $196,000 or the best offer.

The plane is parked at the Corvallis Airport.

Monica Macpherson called the garage sale a success.

"I think we sold five dining room table sets and a lot of washing machines," she said. "The TVs did not sell well, maybe because some of them were analogs."

Vintage lunch pails, Barbie dolls and Cabbage Patch dolls sold.

Dot Rohner said a constant stream of people stopped at the sale, which ran Friday and Saturday.

People dropped in from Halsey, Brownsville, Corvallis, Albany, Blodgett and Junction City, to name a few places.

The next sale is the first weekend in June 2010.
