A Jefferson man who was a former director of Camp Tadmor died Wednesday following a heart attack.
Doug West, 51, was on a mission trip in London at the time of his death.
West was the director of student advancement at Corban College, formerly known as Western Baptist College, in Salem. He lived in Jefferson with his wife, Carrie. They have three children: Rebecca (West) Alburn, 24; Joel, 21; and Mackenzie, 16.
He had been involved in Jefferson Baptist Church for about 10 years. As the church missions director, he went on many trips himself and organized the church's missionary efforts. He also taught Bible studies and led prayer groups.
"He was just the kind of person that lived full out. He did not take breaks," church secretary Jean Krause said. "He always had a huge list of things to do that he was constantly adding to - but that was not a burden, it was a privelege to him."
Camp Tadmor administrator Dave Bertz said West was a very creative camp director who "took our summer camp programming to the next level." West was director of the camp, which is off of McDowell Creek Road northeast of Lebanon, from 1985 to 1994. He and his family lived at the camp during those years.
He went to Western Baptist in 1994 to complete his college degree and then joined the staff there.
West had gone to London to assist missionaries Tom and Barbara Ward, Krause said. According to a Corban College press release, West was organizing a prayer walk in a Muslim area of London. He had just led the mission team in a prayer time on July 31 when he slumped to the ground. He was rushed to a London hospital.
According to the college, life support was removed after his wife and children arrived and a cat scan showed no brain activity. He died Aug. 3.
Krause said funeral arrangements have not yet been made but that there will be a memorial service in the future.
