A family used garden hoses to control a fire in the garage of their north Corvallis house Friday night, Corvallis fire officials said.
The fire broke out at about 8:30 p.m. in an attached garage at the home of Wesley and Kathryn Weber in the 2600 block of Northeast Pilkington Avenue, just off Highway 20.
The Webers got their two other family members to safety and then got used garden hoses to drown the flames before firefighters arrived.
"It could have been a significant fire, but they took care of it," said battalion chief Andy Louden. As it is, the house was not damaged except for the electrical system. Firefighters shut down the power system to the house to prevent a possible short.
Damage was limited to the garage and its contents and the quick-acting Weber family was able to move their vehicle from the garage before the fire got to it.
Louden estimated there was about $5,000 in damage to the garage and $5,000 to the contents. The cause of the fire is unknown and remains under investigation.
The Corvallis Fire Department responded with three engines, one tender and 13 firefighters who remained at the scene for about an hour to put out hot spots, Louden said.
