Craig Pope and Jim Thompson, both of Polk County, each outlined why they would best represent House District 23 during a forum Tuesday at the Linn County Armory Building.
Thompson said he hopes to lessen what he sees as an urban/rural divide. He said repairing and expanding the transportation grid would help rural business stay competitive.
While he commended the state's accomplishments in attempting to control methamphetamine abuse, he said the work is not yet done.
"We've solved the lab problem, now we need to solve the people problem," he said.
Responding to questions from the audience, Pope said he does not support mandatory health care for all, saying if it were forced upon them, his employees would receive less coverage than they are currently afforded.
Pope said he is in favor of yearly sessions for the legislature.
"Having a bit more oversight would really be a plus," he said. "It does make sense and it would help hold departments accountable."
Democrats Jason Brown of Dallas and Wesley West of Sheridan are vying for their party's nomination to represent the district.
District 23 includes parts of six counties, including Benton, Linn, Polk, Marion, Yamhill and Lane.
