A 58-year-old Lebanon woman was in the Corvallis hospital this morning following a two-car collision Monday morning 2 miles east of Corvallis on Highway 34.

Janet Smallman suffered a broken back, broken foot and several broken ribs and was in fair condition.

Oregon State Police described the incident this way: A 1999 Toyota Corolla driven by Matthew Alexander, 25, of Portland was eastbound on Highway 34 at about 8 a.m. when his car crossed the center turn lane and crashed head-on into a westbound 1990 Ford Bronco II, driven by Smallman.

Both were taken to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center. Alexander was treated and released.

Troopers from the Albany Area Command determined through their investigation that Alexander was tired at the time of the crash. He either had sideswiped the Van Buren Street Bridge or a guardrail coming out of Corvallis prior to the crash.

He was released after being cited for reckless driving, reckless endangerment, third-degree assault, second-degree criminal mischief and driving while suspended.

The westbound lanes of Highway 34 were closed for about one hour. OSP was assisted at the scene by the Corvallis Police Department, Corvallis Fire Department and Oregon Department of Transportation.
