A man suspected of shooting his former girlfriend in Albany early Saturday may have fled to northern California, city police said today.

Heriberto Victorio Gonzalez, 20, of Albany is wanted for attempted murder. Anyone who sees him should consider him dangerous, not approach him, and call Albany police at 917-7680 or call 911.

According to police, here's what happened beginning at about midnight Friday:

Gonzalez showed up at his former girlfriend's house in the 3300 block of Hill Street S.E. and threatened to kill her and her new boyfriend. He allegedly used a handgun to fire a "number of rounds" inside the house.

The girlfriend, Maria Ninfa Ledesma Mejia, 22, called her new boyfriend, who arrived at the house, and then Gonzalez fired more rounds.

Gonzalez left and fired his gun back toward the house. A bullet struck Ledesma Mejia in the leg.

After several minutes, Gonzalez returned to the house and allegedly kicked open the door and dragged his former girlfriend into the front yard. About that time, police sirens were heard approaching the house and Gonzalez fled in a white GMC Yukon.

Medics took Ledesma Mejia to the Albany hospital, where she was treated and released.

Detective Sgt. Marv Hammersley said this morning that investigators have a felony warrant to arrest Gonzalez, but they don't believe he is still in the area.

He said Gonzalez may be in Sacramento, where he has friends and family. Gonzalez may still be driving the Yukon, which has license plate number ZWG 350.

He is described as Hispanic, 5-foot-6 and 130 pounds, and has brown hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts should call the Albany Police Department.
