Linn County has received the green light from the Oregon Department of Transportation to install a traffic signal at Highway 34 and Seven Mile Lane.
The approval had some conditions including:
• Vehicle movement at the intersection of Columbus Street and Highway 34 must be restricted to right-in, right-out through the construction of a median on Highway 34
• An interconnect must be provided to the signal at the northbound Interstate 5 ramp terminal intersection to the west.
• ODOT must approve the final signal design plans.
The estimated cost for the signal would be $650,000 to $800,000 according to consultants Kittelson and Associates.
Roadmaster Darrin Lane said the installation is dependent on the development of a park near that location.
That's because the application submitted used traffic numbers including the park traffic in order to meet the requirements for the signal.
"The whole application was based on the existence of the park," he said. "Basically, we have approximately five years to begin construction or we have to start the application process over."
The county planning commission has rejected the county parks department';s proposal for a park, and the department has appealed.
An appeal hearing has yet to be set, but will likely be sometime in October, said Roger Nyquist, chairman of the county board of commissioners.
