Garage sale slated for ALS patient

The friends of Joshua Mack are seeking donations for a benefit garage sale to raise money for his medical expenses.

The 26-year-old Albany resident has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a degenerative nervous system disorder also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Mack has difficulty working because of his illness and has no health insurance. The cost for medication that could prolong his life is about $1,000 a month.

To help cover those costs, a group of Mack's friends is planning a garage sale July 18-20 in the cafeteria at South Albany High School, 3705 Columbus St. S.E.

All kinds of donations are still needed, from clothing and housewares to electronics and even some furniture - "whatever anybody wants to get rid of," said organizer Jennifer Mitzel.

Anyone with items to donate can call Mitzel at 223-2486 to make arrangements.

Mack is a 2000 South Albany graduate and the school is donating space for the event.

The garage sale runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 18-19 and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 20. A number of prizes will be raffled off from 2 to 4 p.m. July 20, with tickets going for $2 a chance.
