People arrested are innocent unless proven otherwise in court. Initial charges often change as a case progresses.

ALBANY POLICE

Shopping cart theft - A woman with a broken foot was found passed out in an electric shopping cart behind the Albany DMV office, 2242 Santiam Highway S.E., around 9:20 p.m. Wednesday.

A police officer spoke with the woman and called for a friend to pick her up. While waiting for the friend, the woman took off on the cart, headed for the street and fell asleep. The officer woke her up again and told her to wait. The friend never came.

In the meantime, police were able to determine that the electric shopping cart and the items in it, including alcohol and cat food, had been stolen from Fred Meyer.

The 33-year-old woman was arrested for theft and taken to the Linn County Jail. The cart and other stolen property were returned to the store.

LINN COUNTY SHERIFF

Crash - Deputies responded at 12:37 a.m. today to a single-vehicle collision on Upper Calapooia Drive.

Jeffrey Allen Phillips, 36, was driving a 1991 Honda Civic north on the road when he lost control on a curve, struck an embankment and the vehicle rolled onto its top, according to the sheriff's office.

Sweet Home fire personnel extricated Phillips from the car and took him to the Lebanon hospital with serious injuries. He was later transferred to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis.

Phillips was cited for driving under the influence of intoxicants.

Car theft - Deputies responded to an early morning car theft today in Millersburg. A woman called the sheriff's office just before 7 a.m. to say her tan four-door Mercedes had been stolen from Murder Creek Drive, possibly several hours earlier.

Converter theft - A catalytic converter was stolen Tuesday from a Toyota pickup parked in a field along Ellingson Road near Columbus Street outside Albany. The pickup owner was working in an adjacent field when the theft occurred.
