Loaner life jackets available at fire station
The Albany Fire Department is once again loaning out life jackets to help people stay safe while in the water this summer. They can be borrowed from outside Albany Fire Station 11, 110 Sixth Ave. S.E.
The jackets are hanging on an outdoor display along Sixth Avenue and can be taken after filling out a form. Jackets should be returned after use so others can borrow them.
Unintentional injuries are the No. 1 killer of children under 14 years old, according to fire officials, and drowning is the No. 2 reason for those injuries.
"We hope to avoid those injuries by having these life jackets available," according to the fire department. "In the three years this program has been in affect we have not had a drowning in the Albany area."
